Boosting the Concept of Topography Optimized Parts

In the computer aided structural optimization process, the necessary synergy between the designer and the simulation engineer is well succeeded if the exchanged information are clear for both sides.

Not only the initial definitions (like design space, process constraints and objective function) must be well determined, but also the final geometry representation needs to follow the solution given by the calculation as much as possible.

So, the product development time to complete the optimized structural concept takes into account not only the simulation, but also the work to get to the interpreted design.

To start the interpretation step, the design is guided by a simulation output containing the resulting finite element mesh nodes or the elements mesh faces.

In a topography optimization, this direct approach usually intimidates the designer, once the optimized mesh is not normally smoothed, making the geometry interpretation harder. This way, this step becomes time consuming.

Among the available tools to smooth the mesh, a methodology to reach the final concept faster was developed giving to the designer a more intuitive simulation result to be interpreted.

In this case a heat exchanger plate was used as object of study.
