Concept Design of a Cross Car Beam Using Topology Optimization in OptiStruct

Nowadays the weight saving plays a key role in the automotive components design. The topology optimization can give a deep contribution to the product development of lightened components. This presentation describes an activity requested by the Interiors department of Fiat Group Automobiles to the CAE department in order to suggest a new concept design for a Cross Car Beam, maintaining the NVH performance target of an existing project, but with a reduced weight.

The topology optimization has been used basically to find the better material distribution to connect the cross car beam to the body and to connect the steering column to the cross car beam, in order to achieve the structural requirements.
