Simulation of a Blast Scenario and its Consequences on a Steel Frame Industrial Structure

For strategic facilities it may be required to consider the possibility of an explosion in their risk assessment study. This may concern the case of buildings with nearby road traffic, where the risk of explosion could concern the transportation of inflammable gases, with the burst of a propane tanker truck.

Risk assessment analyses consists in evaluating different scenarios of accident, and finally establish those for which it is necessary to determine whether or not the structure may withstand the blast overpressure.

The purpose of this paper is to use the capacities of RADIOSS to perform such type of analysis. The methodology elaborated for this study combines dynamic non-linear numerical simulations and analytical formula.

The explosion source is represented using an equivalent TNT mass. The amount of TNT is calibrated to produce the effect of a particular gas leakage and burst scenario.

With the help of RADIOSS simulations, the propagation of the overpressure is estimated over a long range of distance. In order to reduce simulation costs (time and size) the model was built for a spherical propagation of a free field explosion, without the presence of the soil.

The time history of the pressure is then used in a second modelling, using an INLET frontier. This second model contains the soil and the structure, where the effect of the blast on the structure is studied. The interaction of the blast pressure with the soil is taken into account by adapting the profile of the input pressure time-history of the INLET using the indications provided by UFC340.
